ACF 326: 'Samurai Princess' @ NYAFF!

The Samurai Princess never wears this outfit, but she does get nekkid!

Samurai Princess (or Samurai purinsesu: Gedo-hime, as they say in Japanese) played at the New York Asian Film Festival as a midnight feature last Saturday, June 20th. It'll screen a second time this coming Tuesday, June 30th at 4:30 PM at the IFC Center. For the link to the Subway Cinema page on this deliciously delirious film, click here.

Yes, this film is definitely a blood-splattered gore-fest

Kengo Kaji, who wrote Tokyo Gore Police, both wrote the story for and directed this new gore-fest from Japan. Yoshihiro Nishimura handled the make-up effects, as he did for Tokyo Gore Police. So if you loved Tokyo Gore Police - which I really did - you're sure to at least like, and maybe love, Samurai Princess. It's a sci-fi kind of thing that's set in an alternative Japan.

An android Samurai Princess comes into being

The Samurai Princess (Yu Aiba) is the sole survivor of a group of young women who are raped and murdered. She becomes an android to avenge their deaths. There's also a gorgeous white-haired Buddhist nun, who has lovely white eyelashes and white fingernail polish(?!) to match, and who shows up from time to time.

Some android love makin' is always welcome

The story may not make much sense, but who really cares? It's a fun and hilarious splatter-fest of gore. Perhaps not quite up to the level of Tokyo Gore Police, which had a much better story-line, but still quite enjoyable. Some upper frontal female nudity (see image above), but not a lot.

Be ready for the big bang ending!

My recommendation is to definitely check it out if the genre is at all to your liking. It's a wild, crazy and colorful film that's a lot of fun. A very solid 3 out of 4 star ACF rating.
